community building | be the change you want to see

</aside>

be the change we want to see, and the world is going to be a better place. we are all some sort of “victim” of whatever system we live in, and so what? take ownership of who we are and stop coasting. we don’t need to see another innocent young girl be harmed because she didn’t know there was an option to say no.

we need a community to support each other during hard times

in a society that shouts for individualism and independence, we missed the origin story on why we, as humans, are all here in the first place. we are here to see and to be seen, hear and to be heard, understand and to be understood

relying on each other is not a sin. us as humans need each other.

as someone who lived through victimhood, and allowing myself to be in situations that were harmful for myself i wouldn’t be able to stand up here to tell you about the stories that make up who i am without the communities i was in :’)

like what steven bartlett has said, “let’s make dependency and commitment sexy again”

**SPEAK OUT (**formerly STEP OUT 2.0)

my goal is to curate an intentional space for students to educate and reflect upon each other regarding the causes of domestic violence/gender-based violence

pain point: mission misalignment the rho chapter of sigma psi zeta sorority, inc has hosted STEP OUT, an annual step and stroll competition for the past 16 years to fundraise for api chaya, our partner organization, to help survivors financially. as our event continues to scale, the mission in educating our audience has misaligned, as our audiences are so excited with the wonderful performances our competitors bring on stage

action: raise awareness with education i have organized SPEAK OUT, an annual educational event prior to STEP OUT in greek life to reflect upon our living experiences with domestic violence

V1: STEP OUT 2.0 (2025)

Intention: Leading with love + Culture | Vulnerability is Strength

What worked: Content allows people to think and reflect upon equality Education with taking ownership of our lives

What didn’t work: Vulnerability looks different among the crowd

Next Step:

  1. How can I make the content stick to my audience’s daily decision?
  2. What can I do more to provide psychological safety for the crowd?
  3. How can I scale this event for all greek members?
  4. While we are a women-empowering society, how can I create an intentional + non-judgmental space for both men and women, because everyone can experience sexual violence in some way, especially in the greek community.

Attendees: 30 People
